The Cells, Tissues and Organoids Center at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research has an opening for an Associate Scientist to provide advanced cellular model services to research groups at SIMR. This support will cover all aspects of our pipeline, from sample handling, experimental design, performing experiments, and results/data report as well as technology advancements and innovation.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Performing all tasks associated with basic to complex SOPs, with a high proficiency and minimal supervision after all trainings
  • Proficiency in performing collaborative scientific research work, analyzing data, and presenting data/results orally and in written format
  • Identify the scientific needs and create a scientific solution
  • Technology identification and adaptation
  • Planning project milestones and reporting conclusions or deliverables
  • Participation in the scheduling and delivering of cell lines as requested
  • Ability to perform quality control assays, such as sterility, endotoxin, mycoplasma, and others as needed
  • Evaluating newly introduced cell lines
  • Responding to researcher requests for service and offering trainings
  • Attending related cell culture symposiums in order to stay abreast of new research and techniques, and bringing knowledge back to share with the group
  • Other lab duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements:

  • Ph.D. degree in cell/molecular biology or a related field
  • 3-5 years of demonstrated cell culture experience working in a scientific laboratory setting
  • 3D organoids and stem cell culture experience is preferred
  • Gene editing and transfection experience is preferred
  • Primary cell culture experience is preferred
  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Previous managerial experience is preferred

The successful candidate will be a self-starter willing to commit the required effort to accomplish objectives and identify opportunities. Candidates should demonstrate solid problem-solving skills with the ability to think “outside the box” and innovatively. The ability to effectively prioritize one’s workload and manage changes in direction and priority is essential. Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy in work product will be vital. Successful candidates will be a team player who demonstrates and fosters a partnering attitude, while simultaneously being willing to challenge team members to strive to achieve goals.
