The Stowers Institute for Medical Research has an opening for a Training Coordinator/Research Technician in our Rodents core facility.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Designing, developing, coordinating, and managing the training program for various terrestrial species.
  • Working closely with the Attending Veterinarian, core members of the animal facilities, and members of the research team.
  • Ensuring compliance with regulatory guidelines and procedures.
  • Willingness to learn and develop new skills or procedures as required.
  • Conducts orientation, training, and annual refresher sessions for standard operating procedures in the Rodents department.
  • Maintains departmental training records for all members.
  • Monitor animal health and welfare while performing daily animal health observations and husbandry. Maintain quality and health of research animals. Perform daily bottle/cage checks; provide appropriate food and water; changing cages as required; and record animal health concerns per SOP and/or specified protocols.
  • Assist with restraint, handling and euthanasia of various animal species as assigned.
  • Perform plug checks, mating, weaning, tagging, tailing, embryo harvest, and other technical procedures with accuracy including, but not limited to blood collection, tissue collection, and injections.

The successful candidate will have mastered a broad spectrum of basic laboratory techniques in lab animal procedures. Must be well organized with excellent time management skills. Must be able to work both independently and as part of a team. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills are required.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Preference will be given to candidates holding an AALAS Certification at the LAT level or above.
  • At least five years of relevant scientific experience working with rodents as animal models.
