Q&A with a Summer Scholar in the Mashruwala Lab
Can you share some highlights from your experience as a summer scholar at the Institute?
This summer was a wholesome experience of learning, team building, exploration, and fun with amazing scientists within and beyond the work environment.
How has working in the lab this summer contributed to your academic and professional growth?
It gave me a chance to get hands-on experience in handling high-throughput experiments in addition to building a healthy relationship with my lab mates, both of which are important for productive science in the long run.
What has been the most exciting project or discovery you've been involved in this summer?
My study was on a very cool bacterial nano weapon known as the Type VI secretion system which is used in a collective competition scheme by more than one type of bacteria to antagonize neighboring bacteria. My aim was to identify the unknown and unidentified genes involved in defending against Type VI attacks within the bacteria responsible for cholera, Vibrio cholerae.
In what ways has collaborating with fellow researchers and mentors at the Institute enhanced your understanding of your field of study?
Interaction with fellow lab mates and all the other amazing scientists opened doors to new thought processes along with methods and ways to make research easier and more fun. It has also taught me the value of patience in science.
Looking ahead, how do you envision applying what you have learned and discovered this summer in your future academic or career pursuits?
I am greatly interested in microbiology. With all the hands-on experience I gained, be it handling equipment or designing different experiments and assays, this will surely be useful in whatever field I pursue in the future toward making my research much more efficient, easy, and productive.
Has your time at the Institute influenced your long-term goals in any way?
Yes, surely. I loved my project as a Summer Scholar here, and I do plan to continue the project and other areas of studies associated with it for my future exploration and research.
What advice would you give to someone considering applying for the Summer Scholars program?
It will be a breakthrough for you at the beginning of your research career. You will get to be in an environment of scientists performing cutting-edge research with high-tech equipment. This makes science even more fun and engaging.
