What initially attracted you to the Stowers Graduate School, and why did you choose to apply here?
I was heavily influenced by the abundant funding for scientific research and the Graduate School’s heartwarming and caring environment
What unique aspects of the Stowers Graduate School program have had the biggest impact on your research and academic development?
From the very first emails I exchanged with the Graduate School through the entirety of the application process, I noticed a care for my academic success. That has been reinforced every step of the way. My committee members are extremely supportive, and the Stowers Institute as a whole has been instrumental in helping me move my project and career forward.
How has the collaborative environment helped shape your research experience so far?
I'm currently working on a project about evolution, which requires specialized skills in both computational biology and maintenance of cell types from different research organisms. Working closely with Technology Center members that have these skills has accelerated my research. At other organizations, my current project would have taken three times longer to be completed. So, I'm extremely grateful for all of the support and resources available here.
Can you share a moment or experience that made you feel particularly proud or inspired during your time here?
The excitement and sense of freedom that everyone carries when talking about their science is really motivating. Recently, I attended a seminar by a current predoc, and everything from the title to the content within the presentation was delightful and intriguing. It is inspiring to watch and learn from colleagues during our internal seminar series about diverse topics that showcase the importance of fundamental biological questions.
What do you believe sets Stowers Graduate School apart from other graduate programs in terms of resources, mentorship, and opportunities for growth?
Care. Throughout my years as a student and as a member on the curriculum committee, I have noticed how much feedback we collect from the students to improve their experience. This is reflected in our internal budget for conferences, travel-home allowance, and career development staff. It is unlike anything I have experienced before and much different than what I hear from my friends pursuing grad school elsewhere.
What advice would you give to prospective students considering Stowers Graduate School? What makes it a great fit for future researchers?
Talk with trainees from the graduate school, apply, and come see for yourself! It is one of those places that is hard to believe exists, so reach out, find us at conferences, and attend any virtual recruitment events. The Graduate School is extremely science driven, so you'll get lots of hands-on, guided — but independent — research experience.
How has the Stowers Graduate School supported your career goals, both in terms of your current research and your professional development?
For me, the Graduate School has been helpful in making connections with local universities through guest lecture/TA opportunities and also with the career development seminar series. Beyond that, the staff is kind and considerate. They have been incredibly supportive in creating an energizing and welcoming environment.
